Kathy, Kevin Leman has a great book (maybe even two) out about birth order. It's nothing earth shattering, but might be a fun read in your spare time. (I know, hahaha!)

Great blog on Daniel. I agree. He has a tender heart. I was an oldest child, but Grandma was a middlle child (# 3 out of 4). She is even more sensitive to Daniel than I am. I also appreciate Daniel's helpful spirit. Things can get to him at times, and he can be forgetful (aren't we all) but he is a sweet boy, and Grandma and I love him. Dad

Thanks, Dorothy. I hope the children will enjoy these glimpses of their childhood and also know they are well loved. I think as a child you are often oblivious of your parent's love and affection - it's just the water in which you swim. Later on, you look back and see the sacrifices they made and the many ways they laid down their lives, daily, for you.

I love the way you both write about your children. How wonderful it will be for them to read these words in years to come!

Well do we love him, indeed. Although Daniel is by far the most sensitive to hypocrisy and (consequently) the most critical of my many character flaws, he is also the most solicitous of the children when it comes to taking care of me. Some years ago Kathy hit on the clever idea of making the older two kids pair up with the younger two as their 'buddies'. "Take care of your buddy!", we'll say, at mealtimes or crossing the street, or whatever. Joshua and Rachel know that this means they need to cut up the food on David & Sarah's plate or pour them a drink or whatever needs doing that little hands can't do. Daniel, however, was left without a buddy, so Kathy assigned him to me. He takes it seriously, and serves me in kind and sweet ways ... putting a blanket on me if I'm reading on the couch, getting a water bottle for me at mealtimes, fetching Diet Cokes for me, and the like. He is a kind and thoughtful boy who often demonstrates that he loves others more than he loves himself.

I also have seen a big improvement in Daniel's ability to comprehend and engage in abstract thought. One major hurdle that he has recently overcome is in the area of accepting criticism or rebuke. I've noticed a softening of his heart and a wise ability to listen to instruction even when it is administered in the context of correction. I'm very blessed and joyful to be his Dad.
