Thank you all for your kind comments -- I felt that this blog entry never really came together, in terms of saying what I wanted to say ... but, hey, it's only a blog. :)

Posie, I mostly agree with you, except to say that a little organization goes a long way. One of the nice things about the weekend was that we were mostly left to our own devices.

Joyce -- thanks for the compliment with regard to the photo. I was so frustrated on the way home -- Mount Rainier stubbornly refused to come out from behind the clouds, and we'd missed it on the way in. Maybe next time.

Debbie -- I think you are very much correct -- we feel the absence of 'hands-on' fathers in our society very keenly. I want very much not to fall short in this way, but I get busy, and am often lazy ....

Lisa in ME -- the FedEx guy looked vaguely pleased to have such a fuss made of him ... I'll bet he has to deal with fences and dogs and people who are angry that their packages are late ... we may have been a nice respite from all that.

I must say that the boating was the most fun for me. I had never before driven a boat with an outboard motor, and we zipped happily up and down the lake, with the front of the boat lifting out of the water. As Kathy pointed out, David's laughter was a big part of the fun.

Kathy -- you're welcome to come, next time. :)

The boys had such a great time. I'm so glad they could all make some memories. What a treat to have some horses and boats on hand. Hmmm, horses, boats and automobiles? Doesn't have quite the same ring to it but was exceedingly fun.

Tim said David laughed and laughed, squealing in delight on their boat ride. I can just picture it. That must have been incredibly contagious. :) Almost makes me wish I had gone. Then I remember my feelings about tents and sleeping on the ground.

How fun for the men and for the ladies left at home. I think they whole idea of fathers and sons is so lacking in our society today and I know many boys you don't have a hands on dad...it is so sad!

Great job, Tim on the story telling and for stepping up to the plate and getting out there with your young men.

What a blessing this weekend must have been for you all! I'm glad that your boys had such a great time. Sounds like you were stretched and rewarded for stretching.

Blessings,

I enjoyed reading your blog entry, Tim. It was nice of Kathy to let you have a turn. :-) While I really did enjoy all you had to say about dads & sons (I'm going to have my hubby read it too), the one thing that stood out - the poor FedEx guy having his photo taken. LOL I can just see him shaking his head as he drove away - Crazy photo-taking people! LOL I wish I had courage to take more photos such as that - maybe. :-) ~Lisa in ME

I'm speechless. Emotional. One minute I was laughing aloud; the next minute close to tears. You have an inspired way of making me think. I'd give anything if I'd been as wise as you and Kathy when our 5 were growing up. And on top of that, you both take such outstanding photos. The one of the 3 boys in a field of wildflowers was heavenly...from their body posture to the beauty around them. Thank you for sharing.

It looks like the boys had a great time camping doing what they do best-having lots of fun! Aren't you glad that you went (said the snickering sister with the hot shower....)???

I have found that sometimes a childhood memory can almost spoil the decision to let our children experience something new that is foreign to us. It's hard to remember that to our kids, the experience is brand new and they need to make the decision on how high the "enjoyment" scale goes....so I guess mom was right all along - organized fun is a must! (organized fun is when you are forced to participate in something and more times often than not, you find that you are actually enjoying the fun despite your earlier attitude of non-participation)

Congrats to Tim for going outside of his box - it ain't always easy but in the long run, you had some great quality time with your boys!!
