I've never read the story you refer to, but THIS is hilarious! LOVE it! I'm left wondering why you would go to all the effort to gather everything up to go camping for only 1 night! Was it only 1 night?

Fun read....I remember tent camping....years of tent camping....I do think you have a valid point about the size of the tent spaces.

OK, I'll admit it, there were a few prevarications and exaggerations in that story. My brother, for example, is about as far from torpid as you can get, which is why it still gives me a chuckle. The missing batteries in the air mattress were a detail borrowed from an earlier camping trip, and I don't think Latte (if that's her real name) was quite so focused (or dependent) on coffee products. Still, a lot of the trip really happened the way I painted it, which makes me wonder about some of Pat McManus' stories. Crazy Eddie's Dad didn't really fall into a pit with a trapped skunk, did he?

The trip was in many ways a comedy of errors, but we had a great time anyway. :)

Quite a tale! In a nutshell you have just managed an eloquent summary of why we just backed out of our camping reservations last week : ) (actually we are looking forward to going sometime, but our 17 month old hasn't been pleasant night-time company of late... didn't think our fellow campers would appreciated his 11pm - 2am scream-fest) Looks like you managed to have fun in spite of it all!

Great conclusion to your tale, Tim! Now, I just can't imagine Kathy snarling or doing anything unpleasant, so I'm thinking maybe the tale has a few exagerations.

Thanks!

OH NO!!! The batteries weren't in the mattress?? (slapping my head)

You are true troopers and I want to go camping with you guys....we'd be better camping neighbors than the Australians, bless them all, and we surely would have blown up the mattress for you seeing that we gave it to you with no batteries!

At least you can laugh and your children look happy and unaffected. That must be a testimony to wonderfully flexible parents and a battery operated espresso machine. Now....if the espresso machine didn't have batteries.....;)

We like to go camping, but use a pop-up my parents gave us. My philosophy is that you might as well camp for a week, because it takes so much work to go just for the weekend. The key to starting a fire and keeping it lit is using a blow torch (this is definitely Bill's great idea). Anyway, I am glad you at least tried your hand at camping, it is the cheapest vacation, unless it rains and you end up in a hotel (that is a story for another time).
