I often talk about "the heart" with my children.
I'm not content with them simply stopping their bad behavior at the moment I catch them. You're right. They'll just repeat it when we're not around. I may torture them by actually make them listen to me yap:

"You may not be hitting your sister in the head with the bat right now. Yes, thank you for stopping. But I'm more concerned about your heart, the kind of heart that would even WANT to hit her in the first place. What needs to change in your heart so that when your sister annoys you, you do something else besides hurt her? And how can I help you develop the right kind of heart?"
I also remind them that the jails and prisons are full of people who never developed the right kind of heart.
With some training and modeling in repentance, prayer and discipline, they can change and grow and be proud of what they have become.

This is an awesome post and that I need to hear (for myself). Working with children, I see just how hard it is to get across the child that appropriate behavior is not everything. Both the heart and the actions must be corrected, but ultimately it is the child who must do the repenting for their own actions and attitudes.

Excellent, Tim--thank you for this. I just want to add that the difficulty of all this points so clearly at our need for the grace of God, in our own lives and in the lives of our children. How desperately we need to be praying for a spirit of repentance, a tender heart towards God, and the reign of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in our children's lives!

Great post Tim! I love the consistency in the parenting that you and Kathy provide. We are working hard at instilling repentance at our house to, and like you said, there is no magic bullet. I think the kind of parenting you speak of, combined with LOTS of prayer will eventually win out though. Keep up the great work... and the great photos : D
