Grumpy with Pictures

I’m tired.
My knees are sunburned.
The summer is slipping away.
My birthday is coming up and I’m moving closer to 40, not farther away.
I can’t get everything done during these relaxed summer days, how will I possibly do it all PLUS school in the fall?
I am out of shape and eating too much.

give me that sandwich

Eli, Daniel and David were not afraid of the cold water.

waiting for the next train

Sometimes you just have to find a good log and sit down.

Harumph.

On the other hand…

It’s only the beginning of July, that’s hardly the end of summer.
My birthday is coming up!!!

This little girl shares my birthday – best present EVER!

My knees are sunburned because I spent two hours at the ocean with some dear friends.
I walk/jog (wogged?) yesterday for 30 minutes with the kids and went to the Y this evening for some more cardio.
The downstairs is tidy and picked up, the floor mopped and the dishes clean.

AND I can go to bed right now and get a good night’s sleep.
Sigh.

whatcha reading?

Rachel has the right idea – grab a book and head down to the water.

Excuse my grumbling.
Kathy

  1. Good for you, ending on the UP note! That’s the way to take your thoughts into submission. Each day is new: don’t dwell on the undone, but do today what may be done, and rejoice; for this is the day the Lord has made. What man knows what may come after? (I’ve been reading Ecclesiastes.) There is life, and good life, after 40 (and you’re not even there yet!)! So much yet to learn and to share! Take heart!

  2. Why is it that your grumbling always leaves me smiling? ;)

Looks like a delightful day — how did you manage to sunburn your knees? That’s quite a trick!

I’ve been thinking of you as I wade through my newly acquired sets of kindergarten curriculum and attempt to form coherent lesson plans… should be an interesting year around here!

  3. Hi Kathy,

I’m mostly a lurker, but have left a few comments in the past. The first post I ever read was a WFMW that included a blurb about how you use Horizons Math and Math-u-see. It caught my attention because I used Horizons and was thinking about transitioning to MUS. When I got MUS I began realizing why you integrated the two.

How, exactly, do you do that? Are you heavier on H or MUS? Do you do a lesson in both every day? Do you use the MUS instructor DVD and use the H workbook with that? I am going to Saxon for my 4th grader next year, but for my 2nd grader I’m still trying to make the whole H + MUS thing work. Any tips about what has worked for your brood? I’m so curious.

Also wondering how the tomato plant selling did. Profitable for the kids or no? Are you going to sell tomatoes when they come in? What fun to be a kid and free to be an entrepreneur without all the risks.

    Love your blog.

  4. That picture of Rachel makes me laugh. That’s TOTALLY how I enjoy the water. I like it, but it’s more enjoyable with a book!

Oh, and “wogged” is a great new word.

  5. What? Kathy grumpy in July? It can’t be so, this is the birthday MONTH, remember? Presents and parties everyday? Happy birthday Kathy and Sarah. (less than a week to go till the big day:))

  6. It is probably time for me to write an ‘after’ post about the tomato selling … but suffice it to say that the kids sold about $70 worth of plants. Since we spent at least twice that on pots and dirt and seed-starter kits, I’d say it was not a big money-maker on an absolute scale. The flowers we planted (larkspur) for which we used half our dirt and many pots, didn’t turn out to be saleable at all, since they took so long to bloom (still haven’t) and are so tall.

On the other hand, I ended up with a LOT of extra pots (I bought 500) so next year my costs will be lower, and I managed to supply myself with at least 50 healthy tomato plants for my own garden, about which I am very smug.

We have high hopes of selling cherry tomatoes this summer (using the little plastic pots as ‘baskets’) if they ever start producing. So far we have lots of yellow flowers, but only one or two plants have green tomatoes.

When the dust settles, I expect to break about even, considering our savings on tomato purchases over the summer (we eat a LOT of tomatoes). I hope that we’ll show a profit, but this year was pretty heavy on infrastructure (buying the pots, learning how to care for the seedlings, building the raised-bed gardens) — next year we should be better-positioned for more profit. Next year we’ll plant our first batch in February, too — we got a late start this year.

  7. See, these are just the sorts of pictures that make us terribly homesick.
The smell of the ocean and a nice breeze as one relaxed with kids on the beach just cannot be beat, especially if you are hanging out with good friends!
I am sure that in spite of the new Edgren Budget, your honey has some great birthday suprises in store, no worries!
Maybe a trip to see a friend in Thailand? One can hope right? :)

  8. Oh yes, a reason to celebrate – I am getting farther away form 40! Unfortunately, it’s on the wrong side of 40! Here we are with kids so close to the same ages, and you’re so much younger than me, Kathy? In fact, I guess I can now say I’m getting closer to 50 since I was 45 on my last birthday. Sigh!

  9. So you’re getting closer to 40? Kathy, my dear, my birthday is coming up, and I’m getting FURTHER away from 40… just you wait!! lol

  10. as others have mentioned, there is life after 40! and pretty good life still too.

love the water/ocean pics. and the mtn in the next post. oh how i miss that mtn!!! i’m trying to convince the hubster that we need a trip to the coast before he and #1 son head back to school. we’ll see …

i have sunburned my head too. not an easy thing to do, but you and i, we can do it! going swimming at the local pool now.

    gail in sunny, hot idaho

  11. I must be grumpy as well because it’s PASt the middle of July so in my book summer may as well be over already for all I still have to do and now realize won’t get done before we start back to the grindstone again. I was actually a little jealous of a ps mom the other day because she’s getting a summer AND when her kids go back to school she’ll be able to catch up on all that has gotten behind this summer…..
