You should try manual exposure and take a meter reading off from something that isn't back lit then take the picture at that setting, but facing whatever was backlit that you want to photograph.... just a suggestion. I really don't know much about photography at all, but I'm learning.... you could google advice for photographing backlit subjects. It is hard to take back lit photographs.
