Gotta share a few more pics

The problem with taking so many pictures is then I just have to share them. Ha! Actually I hardly think that is really a problem. I really see this blog as a way to finally do some real journaling of our life as a family. I’m thrilled with how easy it is to sit down and write. I love taking lots and lots of pictures and capturing the children in their various states of ups and downs. I try to be real without being too personal or revealing. I love hearing from friends and family and know they are out there, separated by miles, but still connecting.

Thanks for commenting on the blog! It feels like you’re close by when you write.

Here are a few more pictures of our day.

Sarah gets ready to go outside.

Joshua
I realized I didn’t have any pictures of Joshua out in the snow. Here he is by the neighbor’s house.

Rachel had a great time sledding down the neighbor’s yard. Our drive ways are just steep enough to make for a small sledding hill.

Isn’t that a great smile! That girl is having fun!

Sometimes I make a big batch of popcorn for an afternoon treat. It hits the spot when everyone needs a snack and it’s still a good hour or two before dinner.

Today I put the glass bowl (that I used to melt the butter) on top of my griddle. The griddle was not hot and the bowl was empty. I turned around to pick up a piece of paper and heard a loud bang. I figured Joshua had dropped something. I was shocked to see the glass bowl in pieces. I’m still not sure why it cracked. The metal was too cold?? Any thoughts? And it was a favorite little glass bowl from my mil. I have several others (bowls that is, not mother’s in law) but we use them all the time and I hate to lose even one.

Cracked all the way around. Weird.

Thankfully no one was hurt and the popcorn was safe to eat. Ha!

Here is a picture of the yummy hot chocolate Joshua fixed for our evening treat (complete with scoop of chocolate ice cream). Truly looks good enough to drink/eat. Reminds me I haven’t had any chocolate since April 2005. That’s a long time!

Daniel enjoyed his cup. When Tim makes rootbeer floats he lets the kids “holler” when they need a little more soda. This time they tried “hollering” for extra ice cream scoops. LOL! It worked. I think everyone got an additional spoonful or two of ice cream in their hot cocoa. Boy, these are some spoiled children!

Another full day. Tomorrow we will work on any school work that was pushed aside this week in favor of snow fun. I think we have a meeting for our homeschooling co-op but I don’t know the time. Hmmm. I need to make a few calls. This year I will be teaching an hour of kindergarten, a Civil War class (per Joshua’s request) and a class based on the Young Peace Makers materials. I have learned so much in going through this conflict resolution series with my children. I am excited to bring the study to our co-op. I am very thankful to have some great co-teachers for two of my classes. I won’t be entirely on my own.

Tim gave me a Jars of Clay cd for Christmas. It’s their 2005 cd, Redemption Songs. I have been thoroughly enjoying one of the songs, O Come and Mourn with Me Awhile (Our Lord is Crucified). Beautiful. Of course, I’ll Fly Away, is on the cd as well and that’s a big favorite. Very singable.

Winter Wonderland

I had some trouble posting pictures last night so I didn’t finish this blog. Tim worked on things and set up a new way for me to upload my pictures.

Wednesday we awoke to a beautiful snowy vista. Now in western WA an inch (or so) can shut things down. All the schools in the area were closed which meant BSF was cancelled and the YMCA classes. My goodness! To this former Michigander it’s hard not to laugh out loud at such a reaction to a small amount of snow. And yet, there was definitely ice under the snow and it was cold outside (at least cold for WA). Thankfully Tim was working from home and didn’t have to deal with an icy commute. The kids were thrilled to see the yard and trees covered with snow. They worked hard to finish their math and scramble into snow gear and head outside.

Joshua and Daniel grabbed some rope and a sled and used the road as their runway.

Rachel made a wonderful snowman or rather a snowgirl.

After outside play, there was a definite need for hot cocoa.

A good snow day.

Silly Pictures

I absolutely love my digital camera! It is small and portable and easy to use. Tim researched cameras for a long time and was determined to pick out one that I would actually use. He succeeded and lately I’ve gone picture crazy. I grab my camera throughout the day to capture the silly and fun things that the kids are doing or to try out something I’ve learned about picture taking.

Since we have this handy blog and it costs nothing to post picture after picture, I find myself with a lovely forum to express my photo mania. Enjoy or ignore as you wish.

David got some wonderful new Dover coloring books for Christmas. He was so excited to get his OWN History of Sword book (like his brother Joshua). Here he is, hard at work.

I’m still playing with the flash vs. natural light canera thing (could I be any less technical?). Whenever I notice the natural light appears to be strong, I grab a child, pose them and fire away. These are the black and white shots I took of Sarah.

One thing I read in the photography book by Nick Kelsh was to begin laughing, deep, silly belly laughs just as you are about to take a pictures (works best if you have a tripod for the obvious reasons). Most people will smile, laugh, or at least be amused at their rather odd photographer and you can get some good shots. The children know I’ve discovered this and so they try hard not to laugh. We’ve started having contests to see if they can resist my laughter.

Rachel tries but can’t make it. Daniel doesn’t fare much better.

Joshua does the best (never quite breaking into laughter) but notice how stern he must compose his face to begin. Rachel and Daniel tried to help by laughing uproariously from the kitchen while I took these pictures.

Enough silliness–back to work.

back to work

I stayed up much too late last night so I need to get to bed at a decent hour tonight. My BSF lesson is all finished, Daniel did the dinner dishes, and the house is relatively picked up so I should be able to retire for the evening. The rest of the family is already in bed.

Night.

Where Is Tim’s Blog? Oh, Where Is Tim’s Blog? Oh, where, oh where, oh where, oh where…is Tim’s Blog???

You may have encountered an error with one of our current blog e-mails. We could pretend it was a technical difficulty but that wouldn’t be exactly true. Okay, it wouldn’t be true at all. Tim published his blog and then altered the posting date. Gasp! Is that even legal??

Scared Joshua
This poor boy looks scared!

If you received an error message upon clicking on the e-mail notification, it is because Tim was trying to make sure the date of the blog posting matched up with reality. Since he wrote the blog at the end of July, he certainly didn’t want it published in August. Horrors! I think he sensed I was going to be blog happy this month and wanted to get credit for having written a blog in late July. Sigh. Some people are competitive to the end. Don’t even get me started on what happens when he loses Settlers of Catan (which happens at least twice a year whether he needs to lose nor not).

Car shots
This person has obviously just discovered a blatant case of blog date-stamp manipulation.

Since Tim did this little finagling after publishing the blog it means the e-mail points to an error page. Sorry about that. It couldn’t have been helped. Okay, that’s not true. It totally could have been avoided but it’s late and Tim’s in bed so this random blog is the best we’re going to do. At least it’s the best I’m going to do. No doubt tomorrow Tim will come along and fix everything (more blog manipulations–does it never end?). Did you realize just how much tweaking and maneuvering programmers do with our computer systems??? Much more than we will ever know. Well, now you know a little bit because I just told you but beyond that it’s all a great mystery.

I think I need to finish this blog and get to bed myself. I’m starting to sound a little loopy.

If you are still reading this, and perhaps are wondering if I’m going to get to the point and finally tell you how to locate Tim’s blog, read on. In order to find your way to his posting, simply click on the title, Duckabush Blog, at the top of the page. This will take you to the current Duckabug Blog site (hence the title) and you can read Tim’s blog (way down below my MULTIPLE postings–not that we’re counting or anything).

Laughing Joshua
Joshua finds this all very amusing. Does this count as a sort of blog laugh track?

Sorry for this inconvenience! I’m sure it won’t (or maybe it will-I can’t really promise anything) happen again (at least not today as I’m going to bed now).

Pretty in Pink

This weekend a dear friend passed along an adorable little pink hat and scarf for Sarah. In a moment of shyness or stubbornness Sarah refused to try on or even acknowledge the accessories at J’s house (of course). The next morning, however, she suddenly decided they were the most wonderful thing and even wore the combo to bed. Today I was looking through the girls’ closet, picking out a Sunday dress for Sarah, and I came upon her sweet pink dress. I realized it was a perfect match for the hat and scarf and decided she could wear the outfit to church.

Our sweet pink 2 ½ year old girl.

Sarah loved the whole ensemble and went around the house telling everyone, “I’m Beautiful!” It wasn’t entirely a sign of vain pride as I had said it to her several times. Ha! And to her credit, she immediately followed it up with, “and David is handsome.” We read a book last week in school called The 13 Clocks by James Thurber. In it the beautiful maiden was named Princess Saralinda. Rachel and I both fell in love with that name and think it’s perfect for our very own Sarah Lucinda.
