Dough Boys

Can a beautiful, leather couch really be nicknamed ‘Dough Boy?’ Does this match the sophisticated, high class image we’re trying to create? Oh wait, we don’t have a chance to create (much less maintain) such an image. We’ll have to stick with ‘comfortable, relaxed, and well-lived in.’ That sounds more like our style (whether by choice or compulsion).

david the dough boy

Mind you, some would say ‘Cream Puff’ is a terrible name for a beautiful, cream, leather recliner. Sounds like a poodle or a nickname for your junior high girlfriend. My family seized upon the name, but then they have a strong fondness for cream puffs. Rachel requested them as a dessert for our Christmas party (a la Costco and, of course, sold in a large tub) and they were a huge hit.

So ‘Cream Puff’ is here to stay. I’m still debating about ‘Dough Boy’ but I suspect I am fighting a losing battle. Especially since Tim has put his foot down, or rather his feet up (on the comfy couch).

Of course, in my research (and you must do much research when naming a piece of furniture) the term Dough Boys (spelled as one word) has a long and interesting history.

In this instance I am referring to doughboys, as in the military term for the soldiers who fought in World War I. Not, as may have originally been assumed, the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Just wanted to be sure we were clear on things. I did, however, stumble on a whole line of cartoons around the little Pillsbury guy that had me chuckling. I had to post this one as it makes me think of some friends over at the SHS loop who are occasionally feeling down and tired.

I also came across Doughboy Pools which claim to be “The Original Portable Pool.” But I digress.

Wikipedia defines doughboy as a “now-outdated slang term for an American infantryman, best known from its use in World War I, although it potentially dates back to the Mexican-American War of 1846-48.”

dough boy

In a historical context, there are many theories on where exactly the name originated. For more information than you could ever want on the term, click here.

I’ll post just a couple random comments from the article (An Interim Report By Website Editor Michael E. Hanlon):

“The expression doughboy, though, was in wide circulation a century before the First World War in both Britain and America, albeit with some very different meanings. Horatio Nelson’s sailors and Wellington’s soldiers in Spain were both familiar with fried flour dumplings called doughboys, the predecessor of the modern doughnut…”

I’m feeling just a wee bit hungry. It’s been a while since dinner.

“Independently, in the former colonies, the term had come to be applied to baker’s young apprentices, i.e. dough-boys. Again, American soldiers probably were familiar with this usage. This version of doughboy was also something of a distant relative to “dough-head”, a colloquialism for stupidity in 19th Century America.”

Nice! Why is it that something with the word ‘head’ in it is automatically an insult? Mr. Potato head notwithstanding.

“The Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang cites several sources from the War with Mexico showing doughboy to be a nickname for the infantry including:

We “doughboys” had to wait for the artillery to get their carriages over.
N.J.T. Dana [An infantryman]

No man of any spirit and ambition would join the “Doughboys” and go afoot.
Samuel Chamberlain [A Dragoon]

And then, of course, there are the extensive theories that surround the origin of the title. I am still amazed that there has been this much discussion on the topic – enough to warrant more than one hypothesis. Not to leave you hanging, here they are:

The Baked Goods Theory
The Button Theory
The Pipe Clay Theory
The Adobe Theory

I must admit that I have done no further research (as mentioned earlier, this is really more information than most people care to know and I am definitely one of those people) so I can’t truly verify the validity of this report. Still, would goggle lead me wrong??

With that I leave you to carry on. Meanwhile I have a strange craving for donuts.

Silly Kids and Scooters

Today the sun was out and the temperature was warm (relatively speaking). The younger children and I went to BSF in the morning while the older kids went to PE. It’s a busy household. David thanked me profusely for taking him to BSF and not making him go to PE. Hmmm. Not sure what that means since he has complained about BSF in past. I think all the activity at the Y is wearing him out. I decided he was getting enough swimming time in on the other days of the week and he could have the day off. I did, however, take Sarah to her gymnastics class (slipping out of BSF early). David was thrilled to have some free time to play in the gymnastics room. There was only one class meeting at that time and there was plenty of space for him to run around and enjoy the different equipment.

We have been waiting for a break in the cold, snowy weather to present Sarah with a scooter. Rachel, Daniel and David all received scooters for Christmas (and adore them) and so Tim was tickled to find one on clearance that was just Sarah’s size. It has been hidden away in the garage until the sun deigned to make it’s appearance again. Today was that day!!

The other scooters came assembled but this one required a little bit of work. Joshua, of course, took that job over immediately.

What is in the box???

He did beautifully until it came to one point – getting a safety cap on the end of the axle. He tried and tried. I tried and tried. Daniel tried. We were all a little frustrated.

Finally Daniel set out for some masking tape (“maybe we can tape the thing on and then pound it with the hammer”) and I went to consult Tim. The next few minutes were a blur. Somehow I missed the big breakthrough (should have been there to capture it on film) but Tim figured out some way to get the rascally piece on.

Sarah gleefully set off to try out her scooter. She was rather unsure on her feet at first but finally got it working. The children played outside for a nice long time.

While the rest of the group was at AWANA this evening, Rachel went out for hot cocoa with Miss Bobbi from church. Bobbi has served in ROCK (5th and 6th graders) for several years but is currently on hiatus. A few months ago I approached her about spending some time one-on-one with Rachel and, to my delight, she accepted. I am so pleased that Rachel will have another godly woman in her life.

rachel and bobbi

After hot cocoa, the girls returned home and we introduced Bobbi to Sleeping Queens and Heximoes. When the rest of the family returned, David and Sarah rushed in to see “who is this Miss Bobbi.” David, in his inimitable style, immediately said, “She looks way younger than I thought she was.” Lol!! We all laughed and laughed. I have to wonder just who he thought she was and how “old” he suspected her to be. Bobbi came to our Christmas party in December but there were many people there and I don’t think David particularly noticed her. He certainly does bring laughter into our family.

I have some adorable pictures of David and Sarah on the stairs but they are so interesting I have to save them for another blog. They will be perfect for a tale of some sort.

Christmas Pictures Past and Present

I gathered these pictures while I was writing the Project 365 blog for Saturday and just had to post them. What a great look at Christmas over the years. I don’t have pictures scanned in the computer from most of the ’90′s so I’m missing all sorts of memorable shots. I’ll have to see if I can get one of the children to spend some time scanning them in.

Here’s a picture of Christmas in Michigan when Tim and I were dating. Wow, where do the years go by?

I still have this Christmas quilt on the wall behind Joshua. I bought it at JC Penney’s and it looks as pretty now as it did then (although the colors might have been a little darker). Joshua must have been around 4 or 5 in this picture.

The year we moved to WA we didn’t have a Christmas tree (for the life of me I can’t remember why). We put all our presents on an IKEA bookshelf. Our decorations were all packed in boxes in the garage. Kids didn’t mind as long as we still celebrated Christmas. Ha!

Several times Rachel and I traveled to Minnesota before Christmas to see Nana, my mom, and her sisters. Tim liked to send me off so I would remember what a REAL winter feels like and appreciate the nice, warm rainy temps of WA.

How is it possible that the last couple of years we haven’t done this adorable pose (from 2003)??? Next year I’ll be sure to get one of the kids sitting in front of the tree. Don’t let me forget!

This was the only picture I could find of all the children in front of the Christmas tree in 2004.

This gorgeous tree was in the church lobby – 2005. What a bunch of sweetie pies – if you look closely you can see one of the children is trying hard not to cry (feeling sick but bravely carrying on for the sake of the photo).

Last but not least, a picture from 2006 of the children out on the property – marching about after opening Christmas presents with G’ma and G’pa. Ah, how the years do fly by. We seem to favor the color red – Very Christmasy (also works for Valentine’s Day LOL!!).

Chuck E. Cheese

I took all sorts of pictures at the Chuck E. Cheese birthday party we attended this morning. The birthday girl was a 3 year old from our church Small Group.

hannah

Originally I was going to send Rachel to help with Sarah (and the other little girls) but then David begged to go. Since I knew Daniel would be sad if I let Rachel go with David and Sarah, I decided we’d just all go and I would stay as well. Thankfully our wonderful hostess rose to the occasion and managed to find coupons for more pizzas (do you want hungry 13 and 9 year old boys at YOUR pizza party???) and tokens so the whole family could join in on the fun.

ready for fun
Here we are, ready for some fun!

We had the place completely to ourselves for most of the party. Excellent planning on Leah’s part. Of course, it did cut into our school day but the children worked before and after the party and got most of their studies completed. I even finagled in a little nap before swim lessons (thankfully no one captured that on film – ha).

Joshua managed to sneak in a game or two for himself when not taking care of David.

Rachel stuck close by Sarah and was a wonderful helper to me and the other mothers. Thank you, Rachel!!

Sarah had a fabulous time – the rides were just her speed (super slow and not too long).

I had trouble getting a picture of Rachel and Joshua to work – Joshua is just too tall. How did he grow up so fast?? Of course, Rachel is petite so it makes Joshua look even taller. Still, they aren’t my little ones anymore. Sniff, sniff.

I haven’t managed to get any pictures of our weekly wally ball games. Hmmm. I’ll make that a priority for next week. Tim meets us at the Y on his way home from work and we play some wally ball while David and Sarah are at swim lessons. It’s lots of fun and everyone is improving. We are definitely quite something (not sure what) on the court. Lol!

I was very impressed with the children at the end of our time at Chuck E. Cheese. They had a good sized collection of tickets from their game playing – Joshua had won the grand prize on one game, 250 tickets – and yet when I suggested the give their tickets to Hannah, not a single child complained. They didn’t have quite enough to buy a big toy but they could have spent every bit of their tickets on little toys and candy. Instead, they cheerfully ran over to Hannah’s mother and gave her their receipts. My heart was warmed by their generous spirits. It was a fun party.

Saturday Snapshots

This was definitely a day for Snoopy versus the Red Baron. I think four of the five children took a turn playing it.

Joshua bought the computer game for Daniel as a Christmas present. It is too difficult for David (although he tries his “bestest”) but the older three love it. At one point two children were both playing the game, on different computers. The rat-tat-tat-tat of the little plane guns about drove me crazy. Ha! Time for everyone to go outside!!

Daniel managed to pause and smile for the camera but was soon back at his game.

If you look closely you will notice several of the children are still in their pajamas. Sarah had some warm, footie pajamas on and lingered the longest in her sleepwear.

She had some serious coloring (continuing on from yesterday) to do.

An artist really needs the proper tools. A special sharpener that can handle colored pencils is crucial.

Sarah and I had fun snapping pictures of each other. It took her a little while but she finally got the hang of it and actually managed to get a photo that didn’t cut off the top of my head or focus entirely on our lovely, grey carpet. LOL.

I don’t think I spend enough time crouching down on Sarah’s level to look at the world with her. Every once in a while my heart wrenches when I notice how fast the children are growing – when I hear Joshua’s deepening voice, or see how tall he and Daniel are getting, or listen to their ‘adult like’ conversations. Their time here with me is so short–the days seem long and busy and crazy and full of thankless jobs but the joy, oh the joy is immeasurable.

Some of today’s Joy Filled Moments:

  • David repeated called Daniel his “Best Buddy” and “Best Pal.”
  • Without being asked Rachel helped Sarah pack her backpack.
  • When called back to finish a kitchen job, although he was totally bundled up and heading out the door, Joshua came back (without complaint) and finished it cheerfully.
  • Joshua shared his laptop and even helped set up games for the little ones.
  • The three boys took Sarah outside to play with them and included her in their ice games.
  • Joshua and Daniel both willingly offered their computer spot to David.
  • Daniel, occasionally a picky eater, declared the breakfast French Toast casserole ‘Delicious!’ and asked for seconds.
  • The children all picked up their rooms, hauled dirty laundry downstairs and clean laundry upstairs, without any fussing. The big kids helped the little ones.
  • Although she didn’t have a particular friend over, Rachel went around the house, during our party, and took pictures of the kids playing.

As Tim often says, “This is the Best Family in the Whole World!”

3 John 4 “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”

The day continues

Sarah managed to sneak in some computer time as well today. A friend recommended an educational website, www.starfall.com, so we decided to try it out. Sarah loved picking out the shapes for the gingerbread man and playing matching games.

Rachel and I took lots of pictures of her new IKEA chandelier from Mamie and Grandad. This was one of her favorite shots.

I also got a cute picture of her drawing on the white board. My goodness, this board certainly has turned out to be a hit.

We had a fun dinner with some friends who are moving on Tuesday. We played a long game of Settlers of Catan, a short game of Castle Keep, several rounds of Five Crowns, and then even snuck in a game of Apples to Apples (Bible version). You have to cram in as many games as possible when there is a captive audience. Ha! Sad to say good bye but wonderful to have made such good friends.

Good Bye, Tracy and Josh! We’ll miss you. Drive safely and write when you can. Hopefully we can visit this summer!
