Sarah’s First Haircut

It was time. Time to get Rapunzel and do some work on those split ends.
long hair

Man, that is some LONG hair! Somebody, run and grab the scissors. Don’t, of course, grab the scissors and run. Everybody knows you don’t run with scissors. That would be plain dangerous. Safety first, people!

One more look at the luxurious locks of my little lady. There is such grace and poise in her bearing.

As soon as I whipped out my scissors (with great care, of course, I read the notice on the package that says “Warning: scissors may be sharp!”) Sarah turned into Rapunzel Contortionist Girl and tried to watch me cut her hair. Now, with the boys this is a difficult feat, but with hair as long as Sarah’s it wasn’t impossible. It did, however, prevent me from getting a nice straight cut (and I’m only that good of a stylist in the first place). Thankfully, Rachel stepped in to help. Rachel, a sweet Princess of Long Locks herself, grabbed the dry erase markers and began to draw on the white board. This was the perfect distraction.

Sarah managed to hold still during her hair cut.

She’s all done! What a beauty!

I wouldn’t go so far as to say she now has short hair, but I did cut off quite a bit. Let’s do the comparison thing.

Asparagus with a Princess

Sarah adores this dress – she would wear it to church every Sunday if she could. It was a Christmas present (a Costco special) and I wish I had picked up one in every color just to see her dance around and revel in feeling like an exotic princess.

Today was gray and cool, so when Sarah asked to wear her “pretty white dress” to church, I agreed. It has long sleeves and is definitely a winter outfit. I felt smug sneaking in one more wearing before the warm weather arrives to stay. It is, isn’t it? The warm weather is going to come for a good long, summer visit? We’ve had several gorgeous, warm days but nothing that seems to really want to linger. No offense to all of those Washingtonians who actually like the cool weather and mild seasons, but I’m hoping for a good, hot summer.

After church (where Sarah did, of course, receive MANY compliments for her gorgeous dress) I decided to make asparagus for lunch. I’m the only one in the family who likes this particular vegetable (although I must admit I haven’t tried very hard to encourage the children eating asparagus, as that would mean I would have to share) which means if I make up a nice pan of steamed asparagus I get to eat all of it. Yum!

Sarah obviously wishes she had her own plate of asparagus!

I remembered that Carl had commented on Rachel’s healthy living discussion last week. He said asparagus was his favorite vegetable and recommended roasting it in the oven with a little olive oil and fresh rosemary. I didn’t have any fresh rosemary (or dried for that matter) but I did have olive oil and Kosher salt. Yum!! It was delicious. I even took his advice and sprinkled it with a little bit of fresh parmesan cheese.

While I didn’t allow her to actually EAT any of this, I did let Sarah be my photo model. I’m sure real princesses eat asparagus.

This is probably more asparagus than one person really needs to eat in a single day. See what happens when you don’t share.

P365 – Day 126 & 127 (Sick Children)

I would like to have witty or insightful things to post on the blog this evening but I don’t think it’s going to happen. I seem to be empty, or at least out of time and energy. I’m much too tired to stay awake and blog. Although sleep blogging is fun, what appears appropriate in the night is embarrassing the next morning (despite Joyce’s kind words about my blogging). So I am forcing myself to just post the pictures from yesterday and today with just a few words. Then I can get on to sleep.

Just what is this boy doing outside in his pajamas at bedtime??? “One more game, Mom!!”

Sarah is sick. She came downstairs crying last night that her ear hurt. Oh dear! I can ignore lots of things (hoping they will go away on their own) but an ear infection actually needs real medication (not just the over the counter kind).

We went in to see the doctor, late this afternoon. He said she did indeed have ear troubles and had just ruptured her ear drum (he assured me that sounds far worse than it is). Ouch! There’s just no way that can be pleasant. The doctor and I began talking about strep throat and we both agreed a throat culture would be a good idea.

This child is NOT Sarah but he is outside enjoying a snack.

Yup! Not only does little Sarah have an ear infection, she also has strep throat. My goodness. That is no fun! He said she’s highly contagious for two days. Oh, good, isn’t that lovely. Now what do I do about the friend who babysat Sarah today with her own two children playing with Sarah and two other friends from church over for the morning??? Lie, ignore it all, run away? These are all great suggestions, thanks!

Needless to say, Sarah got her antibiotics as did Joshua and Rachel. They both recently suffered from the same cold and sore throat (although perhaps not as severe). Sarah went to bed asking if she could sleep in our room. She wondered if I was going to sleep with Daddy this evening. Ha! She obviously wanted to score a spot on the comfy bed. Last night she and I slept on the couch downstairs until I heard Tim climb into the shower in the wee morning. At that point I told Sarah we were moving to better pasture lands and took off. The bed has never felt so wonderful.

This was BEFORE the pain hit Sarah. She could still smile easily.

Hopefully Sarah’s ear will begin to heal quickly. Thanks for praying for her.

P365 – Day 114 (Sweet Sarah is Sick)

Sarah (age 4 1/2) was sick today. She had a mild fever and a sore throat. Poor little one. She slept in, lounged around for most of the day, played just a little bit and then fell asleep watching a movie (must have been an action flick). It sounds like such a great day, I’m trying hard not to be too envious. Can I have all of that without the pesky fever and sore throat?

sarah

Sarah plays a quick game on Tim’s cell phone.

I took thorough advantage of her sleepy/snuggly state and grabbed her for some yummy time rocking in Tim’s super comfy chair.

Through it all, however, Sarah was careful maintain a proper sense of fashion. She had on a little pink summer dress as a night gown. I told her to get dressed this morning but she just looked at me, overwhelmed and weary. I realized she wasn’t feeling well so I suggested she just stay in her pj’s for the day.

The next time I saw her she had on white tights and a hot pink fuzzy sweater over top her night gown. It’s important to keep up appearances, even when you are feeling a bit down.
